“‘Afterglow’ achieves one of my favorite things in a piece, which is to say it does two things: It catches the eye from a distance with interest, in this case with a striking palette and curious layers that feel organic but also too structured to be evoking the natural world; It also reveals itself to be fascinating when right up close, and here we get to see that it is not only the horizontal layers but a true depth of material itself literally coming off the piece in such a textural way, but also the way the layers of color and shape disappear behind others (in the way that makes encaustic work so beguiling) giving it such a true three dimensionality that the piece transforms into its own object and own world. And then you add the perfectly unexpected addition of the thread which feels like it brings us back into the reality of our physical realm, and made me smile for journey.”
